Hey everyone!
Due to some internet punks fucking with our database we lost a good amount of picture descriptions and comments. Most of them are not completely lost but cut of in the middle.
If you see any of these motherfuckers go ahead and paint a LostCharacter(tm) on them.

Georges Perec (1936-1982)
Perec is also noted for his constrained writing: his 300 page novel A Void (La disparition, 1969) is a lipogram, written without ever using the letter "e". It has been translated into English by Gilbert Adair under the title A Void (1994).
His novella Les revenentes (1972) is a complementary piece in which the letter "e" is the only vowel used. This even affects the title, which would conventionally be spelt Revenantes. An English translation by Ian Monk was published in 1996 as The Exeter Text: Jewels, Secrets, Sex in the collection Three.

after not less than 10 months / 43 weeks / 304 days / 438.000 minutes / 26.280.000 seconds of development, design, testing, and all that now so unimportant stuff, LostCharacters.net is gonna see the light for the first time.

finally ive implemented a rating system which just works. there should be no problems using it cuz its pretty clean and easy code. the only thing i still have to figure out is how i could do a mechanism to prevent user voting for a single picture more than 1 time. just gimme some time and i will figure something out...
i also killed a small but very annoying bug in the general navigation. imagine the following scenario: you browse through some categories in the browse section, click a pic to open it up and create a favorite. now you want to go back by clicking on the picture but you will be taken back to the confirmation that your favorite was successfully stored. so you have to use the back button of your browser twice to get back where you came from.
that was not very convenient. well, i fixed it with a neat trick in my CurrentPage-Script where i added a PageBefore entry to store the page you were coming from to go back there instead of using a javascript to tell your browser to go back one page.
neat, huh?

some new features |
ive implemented some new features to show or hide personal data. take a look at the settings, there are options to show/hide your e-mail address, last name, and birthdate/age.
also i placed a second shout box field at the top of the box as kathi requested in her beta test feedback.

its been a long time... |
... since my last news entry but trust me, i was not sitting around doing nothing! as always ive eliminated a lot of bugs and added a few features. the most of them are just available to admins, like editing and adding news entries, editing user properties, blocking users and so on...
on the user side i want to implement a little rating system, which would be a great addon to the browse section and extension to the favorites.
what else? hmmm, i ported the database to sql server and it was fun... no, seriously it wasnt, but it had to be done. the domain is already working: http://www.lostcharacters.net/ takes you to some nice "coming soon" screen until the official launch, which is by now expected to be somewhen in october!
ok, thats it for now... im off to cinema and you should take your cam and capture some LCs out there! ;)

Settings finished, Bugs killed, Features added! |
Alright, today i finally managed to get the settings page done! Now everyones able to edit, delete & move (category) his pics to his likes! Then i went back to the idea i had a few weeks ago to be able to view all users and added it to the front page - pretty simple but cool! And theres even more new stuff in the browse section where you can select the sorting mode! go check it out! And yes, theres even more cool stuff to come! Then, the not so important (to the end user) stuff is that i just removed some bugs again... some in the settings pages, some in the messaging system, and some in invisible parts of the site. And another thing is that i should start to write some admin pages to be able to do stuff like writing news, deleting pics or comments from other members, kicking users, and all that stuff because ist pretty boring to do all that in access (or later sql-server)!

More Settings... |
Today I did what i had in mind for a long time now, I implemented the so called "page-rembering"-mechanism, which works superb!! I someday came up with the idea, wrote it down, and it really works nice! so now, if you push the refresh button of your browser you will not be pushed back to the home page, go try it! i also mangaged to get the settings page for favorites finished, this was easy... ;)
Well, there's not much to do anymore, except for the Upload Management pages and some details... So I'm looking forward to start beta testing in a few weeks...

Yes, I began working on the settings page, which will be a fine thingy when finished. but finishing it will take some time... i now finished the first section, profile and password updating which was easy but upload management will be a lot harder to do and is gonna take more time. favorites will be easy again, cuz i just need one delete button and thats it!

Messaging, Comments, About Us, Disclaimer, and a lot more... |
Comments now work fine, Messaging so far so good and some improvements in the upload section. Also the about us page and the disclaimer are currently worked out by martin and should be ready soon. Messaging is really working good and by now (speaking about code-lines) the biggest page on here. although i haven't made many tests yet it seems very robust & stable.
well, the next thing i'm gonna do is probably the settings page(s), which i'd like to rename... this page will, like the messaging system be a hard thing to do. mostly cuz everybody should be able to change his member details and pic details, delete pics, favs, change startup page and maybe (but that requires some major overall changes) customize the look and feel of the whole page. i thought of chaning colors, background image and that like. alright, thats it for now!

Comments, Favorites, Improvements! |
Commenting system is 50% finished, favorites are working great and some improvements belonging the way user-texts are rendered (eg. if someone uploads a description for a pic it isn't any longer display in a full row, so in fact a carriage return is now displayed!)
Also I added a resize function in the upload section!

Finished Registration today! |
A big step in development passed today!
The registration is now working and can be used as expected. Currently I'm working on the home-page design, which i will finish shortly. However the ASP-Part will be very hard because of the complex design. Anyway I'm looking forward to complete the first version tomorrow.

Yes, these early days are sometimes driving me insane, but then there are times when something is really going fine and that gives me the motivation back. Anyway i keep learning and feeling better if something goes good. Gonna hear from me soon!
